HI all Wanted to put in a review for the BaldPate Inn and it is up above Estes Park, Colorado. It is a Bed and Breakfast that is celebrating its 92nd year this year and it is by far one of my favorite places to go for lunch or dinner when we are up in Estes. The restaurant itself is showing its years a bit but that really is part of its charm and the view from the dining room is just amazing looking down from its perch above the Estes Valley. The menu is just soup and salads with some great deserts to finish it up. They normally have 2 soups to choose from and these are both very hearty and made on the premises some of the choices we have seen are white chili, chili, vegetable, vegetable beef and chicken and each and everyone of them are so very good and filing with large chunks of meat and vegetables it just puts a smile on your face and a sigh to the belly! To go along with the soup they have a great salad bar filled with tons of fresh ingredients and normally 2 specialty salads also made fresh there we have seen many varieties here from apple walnut to a pasta salad. The final bit they have is fresh made bread and muffins and these are always my doom with the taste and the freshness just making me eat that extra bite then one more. They also have some very good tasting deserts but even more than your standard restaurant I seldom have the room to try it out! The Bald pate is normally open from May- October and while reservations are not required they are strongly suggested. If you are heading up there for more than just a day trip the Bald Pate also offers cabins and rooms to rent which all seem very cozy but the real reason to stay here is the view and it's out of the way location. I am not going to rate this place on our standard scale as it is more casual but we try to make it up there 2 or 3 times a year and in a world with so many options that is a large compliment in itself! The Bald Pates website is baldpateinn.com and it is located at 4900 South Hwy. 7 Estes Park, CO 80517 with a phone number of 970-586-6151.

My daughter and I went for lunch yesterday just to try this place. It's a very old inn and interesting and has a cool "key" collection. Lunch was ok. The soups were really pretty good (homemade) a sort of buffalo meat stew and potato onion soup. I liked the stew a lot. They also had bran muffins and a feta/bell pepper muffin, both I liked. My daughter only liked the bran muffins. The staff were on the ball and helpful and pouring additional water. The salad bar has a LOT to be desired. Most of the fruits were canned, they had some peas, think they were frozen and thawed out, jicama was good, there were chopped olives, eggs, several nice dressings, several lettuce types and spinach. I didn't think the salad bar was anything special at all. I could make easily a much better one at home and for the price of $15 for the soup and salad and muffins, seemed a bit steep to me. You can eat all you want though and I had heard pie was good here but we were too full on soup and salad to order the pie. I don't know the price of the pie. If I ever went back I would have more soup and muffins and less salad. I forgot to say that they also had cornbread which I think is supposed to be very good but I have had better at many places.

We enjoyed our salad and soup bar. The bread was home made and delicious. The rustic lodge atmosphere added to the charm of this wonderful historic restaurant. The pies were delicious! We stayed overnight and found a three course meal was served. Say hi to the staff. Most are university interns from all over.

If you plug the current address into a GPS...be sure to type in "South" hwy 7...or else you will have a very spooky drive... 4900 S. Hwy 7, Estes Park.

Soup, salad, and pie. A good formula for this one-of- a-kind restaurant. Worth a trip if you're in the area.

The Baldpate Inn is on the National Registry of Historic Places and is one of our favorite places to visit when we come to Estes Park. Only the second family to own the bed and breakfast since 1917, the Smith Family lovingly cares for the wonderful property and their guests. After a long hike, we like to enjoy a late lunch in the restaurant. Two delicious soups are featured along with an extensive fresh vegetable and fruit salad bar served from an antique bathtub. There are numerous choices of fresh baked breads and muffins to munch on with your meal. The desserts, pies and cakes, are homemade with fresh berries and chocolate. We love the hummingbird feeders positioned in each window of the restaurant and on the large porch. The Key Room will blow your mind. There are keys from Mozart's wine cellar, the Pentagon, Westminster Abbey and Frankenstein's Castle. Reservations are a must.

I'll start with saying you better like soup and salad if you want to eat and if not you better love pie or else you're kinda screwed. I saw a bunch of their awards when I first walked in and thought this place doesn't need my review but they're getting it anyway. The view is amazing, I biked up from Estes which I wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy but its beautiful. The setting is rustic, its a bit hard to find, its at the base of a mountain (Twin Sisters, really cool hike), its got crazy history and my favorite...the owner. We had a party there and she is an amazing planner, organizer and go to person. She was just wonderful and we truly appreciate it. Side note: call for the soups and the breads, that way if it stuff you don't like you can go on another day!

We enjoyed our stay. The breakfast was excellent and filling. We were consistently relaxed by the surrounds and by the very helpful staff. Staff consists of college kids, not professional hoteliers. Regardless, they were pleasant and effective in their jobs.

The three stars are definitely because of the view, the food was over priced and uninspiring. Glad to say I've been there but nothing to write home about.

Ramshackle! Bizarre! WTF? A SOUP & SALAD* Bar in a rundown splintered 19th century lodge perched on the Peak-to-Peak Highway (State Highway 7) 20 minutes outside of Estes Park.It is a sight to behold. After parking AWAY from a landslide area quite literally overhanging the parking area, we hiked up to the lodge, mounted the creaking ancient, not-up-to-code steps and entered the chaos that is BALDPATE. Now I laugh: We made a RESERVATION and dressed for dinner, thinking this was a real restaurant, only to arrive to complete mayhem - Large families crowding BATHTUBS (yes, these are the salad* bar vessels) full of Salad* items. * Salad here does not contain anything green or fresh that we could see here. The bread bath tub was EMPTY, nothing but crumbs. There were two soups available, a white chili and a garden vegetable. A cheese platter a la Frat House was precariously balanced in the middle of the room, piled high with cheese cubes. Even though we made a reservation and the dining room facing the vista/windows was EMPTY, we were seated in the family room. After perusing our options ... (Nay to the soups, and there was nothing left in the bath tubs), we graciously made our exit, thinking we would at least have a glass of wine on the terrace and enjoy the campiness. But alas, when we got to the terrace, it too had been hit hard and was littered with the remains of others. So sadly, and chuckling, we bailed to go back for grub in Estes. This is a MUST DO for the complete random factor. I wonder when this place will fall down? I wonder when there will be a new story about cars getting covered in a landslide (see the photos, and do not park under tree roots hanging out over your car)- We noticed it was for sale by Sothebys- this place could be FANTASTIC with a good renovation and menu- JUSTIN CUCCI- you're our only hope!

The only reason I can't give this place five stars is because it is beyond rustic. The floors go in five directions, the shared bathrooms need updated ...as does everything. However I can appreciate the true mountain style. The staff are very helpful and friendly, the owner is very sweet and made me coffee at 530 am even though 6 am is the norm. The food was beyond excellent. Everything homemade and fresh. Everything we had was amazing, from potato crustless quiche, bran muffins, the jicama salad with jalapeño and peanuts was to die for. The scenery and trails were amazing. I would definitely recommend this place if you can be a pioneer for a night or two. Definitely stop by for a meal if passing by...

We had the Cowboy Buffalo Soup and Banana Butterscotch muffins. Everything was delicious! Quaint historical place to eat lunch.

Walked in for a piece of pie before going up to the mountains. Usually only allow people to eat if they have a reservation but for pie you don't need one. Great slice of history with the most delicious pies to overlook breathe taking views. Humming birds are right outside the window where they feed right by your table. The staff is so pleasant and helpful. You can take a step back in time while enjoying the beauty and historical history of this inn. The amount of keys this establishment has is overwhelming but the most interesting pieces of history.

This is one of my favorite places to stop for pie on the way too or from Estes Park. It was first recommended to us by a co-worker who used to work there. It is a very old inn and rustic in some ways. There isn't a spectacular view, but we do enjoy watching the humming birds while we eat. They have a huge collection of keys in their little gift shop area and even have a few rooms which we toured. We have always found the service here to be good, and the pie to be excellent, very light and flaky crust and superb fillings. We haven't tried anything else besides the pie, mainly because of the price, it is pricey for a soup/salad buffet, but I think it would be worth it if you enjoy that type of thing, everything is made fresh daily and smells wonderful. There also isn't very much parking so it can be a little difficult to find a spot on a busy weekend day, but I think it's definitely worth it to check this place out.

Food is amazing after a long hike, all fresh from scratch. We Love the Honey Wheat Bread, Cornbread is delectible,Scandinavian Apple Pie, White Chili. We stayed for our anniversary trip one year...the rooms are still VERY 80's and on the pricey side. Would not stay at the cabins again, but would hit the restaurant anytime. Visit the Key Room based on the novel Seven Keys to Baldpate. Ancient keys from Tetuan, Spanish Morocco, Castle Saint Angelo, Key from Lhasa Tibet, Japanese gate key used to unlock bamboo gate. Key to Mozart's wine cellar, Key to General George Washington's headquarters at Hessian Barracks Key from Westminster Abbey Royal Chapel the list goes on and on. A quick trip to Lilly lake across the street and trail heads to Rocky Mountain National Park just up the road.

Wow -what a great find! Our friend took us on a brief hike just outside of Estes Park, and when we were ready to refuel, he suggested that we go to the Baldpate Inn. This place was really cool! It looks like a place you might find in the Adirondacks--a craftsman-style 1917 lodge. It has an expansive porch where you can sit and admire a lovely view, and a number of hummingbird feeders are strung up along the dining room windows. These feeders are overrun with hummingbirds! I've never seen anything like it and was mesmerized. From inside the dining room you can stand inches from the birds and really take them in. Just fascinating. While we waited to be seated, we wandered around their key collection which is much cooler than I had anticipated. Keys of all shapes, sizes, and ages fill the room to the brim. The inn is a bed and breakfast, but we just stopped in for their soup and salad buffet. Everything was tasty, although not mind-blowing. Really it is more about the atmosphere and experience, but it was also just the ticket after our hike. Our friends ordered a piece of pie and they were very pleased. If you are in the area, this place is definitely worth checking out!

Going down, down, down hill! My other review of this restaurant was from last year, and it summed up that visit and previous ones. However, I have to say this is now a definite pass on the eating. While the setting is still very nice and the staff pleasant, the chairs get older and more uncomfy and the food and prices go in opposite directions. The first time we went here it was priced well and the fresh baked bread and muffins were tasty, the soups hot and varied, the salad bar ingredients fresh and crisp, and the pies delicious. As the years went on, the food went from excellent to average as of last year. This year was the worst! Admittedly it is the 100th anniversary of Rocky mountain National Park, and everything is overrun with people so service this time was slow and they kept running out of salad bar ingredients and couldn't keep up. However we paid $16 per person for what is really a medium size salad bar, no drinks or pie included. The Italian Muscato wine was good and for $7 per glass, reasonable. The waiter was so ambushed by customers that the coffee was lukewarm by the time it came, the hot chocolate required 3 reminders and delivered at the end of the meal very watery, and our plates were taken only at the end of our meal in a pile. The red chili with meat was enjoyed by one of us but the broccoli cheese soup was salty and bitter. The muffins, blueberry and a garlic/onion, were of a bland mealy texture & taste tho the bread was warm and good. The chocolate mousse was enjoyed by two in our party. Overall the impression was of a very expensive cafeteria except with a nice view. I can no longer recommend this place for meals. Overpriced and unimpressive food.

First the good - Great 3 course breakfast! Yummy food, excellent service. However: The room is tiny, and I think the bed was the original installed in 1917. If rustic is what you want, then this is the place. We had to share showers and bathrooms with the other guests (not a surprise, we knew that in advance), but the room itself was unpleasant. It smelled funny, they don't change the linens, and ours had a stained pillowcase. They also don't sweep the floors in the rooms. We had to wipe the dirt off of our feed every night when getting into the swayback bed, and there was a red smeared stain that was never cleaned up during our 4 day stay. If it was less expensive we might have been fine, but for hotel prices we felt taken.

Way over rated! Very cute location but the food was really disappointing, even for just soup and salad. The salad bar was okay but even your local Whole Foods has a better salad bar. The soups, while creative, were way too salty. I couldn't even finish it. The chili I tried on the other hand was very bland. I don't think I would return.

Bad food, overpriced tourist trap. Note that this review only applies to the "restaurant" portion of the Inn rather than the hotel as we came for lunch only and are not guests. The physical facility actually appears to be very pleasant and quaint and may very well be a nice place to stay. We were dissappointed to learn that there is no menu (for lunch at least)but rather a soup and salad bar, only. This is probably our fault, however, for not researching properly and so we tried to re-calibrate or expectations. Unfortunately, execution of even the casual, simple menu items available was very poor. The two soups were white chili and cheese broccoli. The cheese broccoli was watery with unmelted chunks of what looked to be a velveta block in it and the beans in the white chili were under cooked and crunchy in the middle. Both were very bland. The salad bar lacked all but the most basic garnishes and bulk dressings and was about on par with a cafeteria in terms of quality but with less selection. The only positive thing that i could say is that the corn bread wasn't bad. We didn't try the pies as they were $6 extra. The tab? $67 for two adults and an 8 and 12 year old. The kids, one a picky eater, the other not left hungry while the wife and managed to leave partially filled with large, sub-par salads. Perhaps the worst part was that we learned after paying (after opening yelp to write this review, that there were kids options that weren't mentioned by our server.

We did not stay here, but came for the all you can eat salad bar and soup. We really enjoyed the salad bar, but I thought it was overpriced considering how limited the choices were. However, all the items were super fresh and there were some true knockouts with the chili and some of the muffin/bread items. My husband was seriously disappointed that the pie was not included in the buffet. The hotel itself is very cute and the sit down area on the porch outside was great. They have a million hummingbirds enjoying their hummingbird feeders.

Love the Baldpate Inn! If you like soup and salad this is the place to be. The bread is homemade as well as the fabulous desserts. If you are lucky enough to get breakfast you won't have to eat again until dinner, I save the cinnamon roll for later.

Growing up in Estes Park I had the pleasure to eat at the Baldpate many times. I haven't been there in years, but this past weekend I had the opportunity to visit with a group of girlfriends for the weekend. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Not only did we enjoy the three course breakfast with homebaked goods, after a hike around the property we found ourselves in the dining room gorging ourselves on freshly made soups, more homebaked goods and a healthy salad bar. The atmosphere is rustic and beautiful and the food is great! I'm fortunate I was reminded of this hidden gem and will be visiting more frequently, even if it's just to enjoy a slice of their famous pie in the porch swing after hiking in Rocky. It's definitely worth a visit!

Nothing spectacular here except for the view. I've been vacationing in Estes Park since I was a kid (less frequently now that I am an adult), and every trip has always included a trip to the Baldpate. The location is ideal--tucked away in the pines on a mountainside off highway 7. The view is spectacular--reserve a table on the enclosed porch to fully appreciate the beauty around you. Make sure you spend some time enjoying the porch swings on the open porch outside the dining area. 5 stars for location and ambiance. The food is average to meh with an occasional gem (like the lemon ginger muffins I had the other day)--three stars overall. The salad bar is fresh (enough) and well stocked. The homemade breads and muffins are usually good, though sometimes dry. The soups have been pretty disappointing on my last few visits--I'm not sure if the quality has dropped, if it's just that I'm an adult now and expect my broccoli cheese soup to consist of something fresher and less processed than cheese-whiz and frozen broccoli florets. The pies are yummy. I find that salads aren't really popular on Estes Park restaurant menus, so it is nice to have a place where you can come and stuff yourself full of vegetables. All-you-can-eat salad, pie, splendid views, and nostalgia will keep me coming back year after.

I think a trip to Bald Pate is a fun thing to do when visiting Estes Park. - especially if you are taking someone who has never been there. The trip there, the great porch with the porch swing, the view, the hummers, the key museum - these are all worth it. It is an event!! The food is not the reason to go! It is basic; although the honey wheat bread is always my dessert. I suggest sharing a piece of the cornbread. It is good but can't be good for you. The wait staff are all young people and they are very pleasant. Five of us went this week and we all loved it. We were full of soup, salad and bread. No one had room for dessert. Loved looking at all the old pictures in the dining room, too. Great fun.

Enjoying a family reunion in the Estes area over the weekend, I ventured out onto the Mary's Lake Road with a cousin or two to go for a hike around Lily Lake. Somewhere along the way from Lily Lake to town, my cousin pointed out the road to the Baldpate Inn to me, and said something like this: "That's just the kind of place you would like, Harmony..." It was hard to surmise just exactly what he meant by that, as his tone of voice was rather curious. I asked him why he thought I would like the Baldpate. He said it is a Bed and Breakfast, and he knows I adore the Bed and Breakfasts. Simple enough, right? So I looked up the Baldpate when I got home from the *delightful* reunion which took place elsewhere in the vast swirl of lodging, consumerism, elk, chipmunks, & mountainous forests that is Estes... My cousin is so right. I know I would love this place. I plan to call and see if they will be open duing the time I must attend a conference in Estes in a few months, as I see they close for the winter. I am looking forward to experiencing this place. I know we are supposed to really go to a place prior to reviewing it....it was just so alluring from the road, and so affordable and perfect on the website. The Baldpate Inn is in my future...that's all I can say.

Stayed here for several nights and absolutely loved the inn! It is rustic, simple, antique, amazing. Nice room with views of the mountains. Cool museum-like rooms with key collection. Great breakfast. Sweet porch where you can enjoy the breezes in comfort. Heard a special talk on hummingbirds while we were there. Near some hiking spots. Friendly young staff and owner!

Not worth the view! The food was terrible. Just terrible. And @ $14.95/ person, including my 9 year old, there are so many better options in Estes. For a place that only offers soup and salad, you would think the salad bar would be tremendous. There were more dressings than items available for the salad. The bread was tasteless. One of the two soups was eatible, thank goodness, so we all had that one soup. That was pretty much dinner: a bowl of soup for $15. Never again...

After hicking and picnicking at Lilly Lake we visited Baldpate for desert and coffee. We dinned on homemade, delicious peach, chocolate, and key lime pie. The view while we ate was fabulous and was made even more enjoyable by the abundat humming birds feeding outside the dinnind area. After our pie we enjoyed talking with the staff and listening to them share some of the history of this century old establishment. We look forward to revisiting the Baldpate in the futrue.

We went on the suggestions of others who had visited before with wonderful things to say. It was not disappointing at all!!!! We intended to only visit for a bit and check out the Key Room. Hundreds and hundreds of keys from all over as well as many special keys (to various cities, Edgar Allen Poe's dorm key, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson's key to 221 Baker St. etc.) Very impressive and tons of other historical artifacts. There was also a nice reading room too. We ended up staying for lunch and didn't have to wait long. They have an excellent salad bar, delicious soups and muffins, and I'm sure the gigantic slices of pie were good too but we were too full. The whole place has that old timey mountain vibe and staff was super nice!
